I make people laugh and then say, “It’s funny cuz it’s true.”
You might remember me from such web sites as A Study of Gothic Subculture: an Inside Look for Outsiders. I’ve been researching, speaking and writing about Goth since 1997. A self-described “darkwaver” (read:Goth in denial) since 1992, former DJ and concert promoter, band manager and zine creator, I’m also a smartass who enjoys a witty skewering now and then.

Hello. I’m enjoying your blog. I thought that you might be interested in my new book, Cartwheels in a Sari: A Memoir of Growing Up Cult that was recently published by Random House. In the memoir, as I’m leaving the cult, I become a goth. You’ll certainly recognize the sections that I write about in the Limelight and at the Bank in NYC back in ‘the days’…. I’d love to hear your thoughts, and it would be great if you wanted to write a review.
All the best,
Jayanti
I created my own blog “Stuff Goths Like” last year for a school assignment. Check it out.
You obviously know nothing about our culture. I’d suggest you stop reading all of these online webpages describing what “goth” is. And I have a dog, a bird, and a cat. The cat’s name is Midget, the dog’s name is Brutus, and the birds name is Luna (aka, the moon), so there ARE excpetions now aren’t there?
Please feel free to email me, I would love to hear where you got your information from. Probably from a poser that knows nothing about the culture and is is probably in the “Emo” phase of life, and emo is a fad, so don’t start saying what they are because they are nothing to me if they have to act like that to fit in. And I have a best friend who is punk, so I think I know what I am talking about when I talk about labels.
Think about all I just said, and then come talk to me, it would be “fun”.
Ophelia…you’re fucking embarrassing…
You’re the type of person Jhonen Vasquez was mocking in JTHM…besides, your spelling is atrocious. You clearly don’t read enough to be a “real goth” ™.
Wow that is so funny and most of it is kinda true too… Well my cat is called Vlad so yes I suppose there are exceptions… Still though I’d say most of my friends’ cats are called something deeply meaningful lol.
And Ophelia – seriously, you should chill more… If somewhere you have come across a subculture that is in no way reflected by at least some of the posts in this blog – erm well I’d ask where and who they are, so I’m sure not to accidentally bump into them and have all the joy sucked out lol.
Hi! I like your blog but I’m having trouble getting it to display correctly in the K browser. You might want to doublecheck your css stylesheet. Rock on!
